Tell us a little about yourself and how you started painting.
Hello I’m Aina Jane, and I’m an abstract artist in the small town of Dassel, MN. Ever since I was a little girl, I loved creating things and always had an itch to make something artsy. I started painting in high school with a lot of pictures of birds and birch trees. When these pieces starting selling in local shops it motivated me to keep at it! As I kept painting I could see my style slowly coming together. Now I mostly paint modern abstract art because it lets my imagination go wild and free. I can’t help but play around with different designs and I’m always painting on things.. like my Birkenstock’s (they have about 10 layers on them), paper cups, and even my closet doors! The play of color and texture throughout my work encourages the viewer to use their own experiences to connect with the art. That’s what I love about abstract art.
Where do you get your inspiration for your art?
I get my inspiration from everyday things in life. Trips I take always inspire me along with being in the city life. There are so many colors, textures, and unique objects in cities and I transform these experiences and emotions into visual work. People might think I’m always painting but to be honest I don’t paint everyday because I need to build enough inspiration in my mind, and once I feel good I let it all out onto a canvas and go wild. I don’t always know exactly where my inspiration came from for each piece but part of the fun is not knowing how the painting will turn out.
Your work is often abstract, how do you know when a piece is done?
The finishing touches take the longest because I take time to make adjustments to shapes, contrast, and color. It’s funny because one little dab of paint can change the focus of the painting as a whole. With that being said, when I have studied the painting for several days or more and I can tell the flow is right, I feel that the piece is done.
What are your business dreams/goals?
My dreams and business goals often change as I try new things and find what I really enjoy. One thing that often comes to mind are murals. I helped with one mural in my hometown Dassel, did another one in a restaurant I work in, and I would love to do more. I like the fun atmosphere they give and for me it makes my experience there much more memorable. I dream of expanding my art showings and to work with designers to create custom pieces. I love trying new things. I will keep experimenting and keep my mind open for new opportunities.
We would love to learn how to paint. Do you ever host workshops?
I have taught quite a few painting classes but most of them have been for children. I usually teach at my mom’s art studio, l.louse, in Dassel. I also have done private classes and will travel to teach a class for parties or special events. Hosting special workshop events is definitely something I’m interested in.
Is there an artist you look up to?
The artist I look up to the most would have to be my mom. She has taught me so much and is an amazing painter herself. She has always encouraged me to not give up and to try new things that come my way (no matter how scary they sound). If it weren’t for my mom I wouldn’t be where I am today and I am so thankful for her!
