DIY Drop Cloth Wall Banner
It all started when I fell in love with a cute wall banner listed for sale on Etsy, but I did not love the $90 price tag! Haha. I remembered that we had an extra drop cloth just sitting around that I had previously used for our bedroom curtains, so I decided to make my own version of the wall banner!
In total, this project cost less than $10 since I already had a lot of the materials needed! You can find affordable canvas drop cloths online here or at your local Walmart or hardware store and the rest of the supplies are very inexpensive as well!
Materials Needed:
- Canvas Drop Cloth
- Sharp scissors
- Ruler and/or measuring tape
- A printer (if using my PDF)
- Black matte finish craft paint
- Small paint brush
- Ultra-fine sharpie
- HeatnBond NoSew Hem Tape
- 1/2" Wooden dowel (This will need to be cut by a chop saw or hand saw to the desired length)
- Iron & ironing board
String (I used this cotton twine)
Start by laying the drop cloth on a flat surface with the hem at the top,
you will need to cut out a 16 x 22-inch rectangle. Measure 16 inches from the righthand edge and make a mark at the end of your tape. You can add additional points along this line to make it easier for cutting straight.
Next, measure 22 inches down and make a mark (and additional if needed). Then cut out your rectangle. C
To create the bottom point of the banner, you will need to find the center of the bottom edge. With the hem still at the top, measure 8 inches along the bottom edge and make a mark. Then on the right and left-hand sides of the rectangle, measure 16 inches down and make two more marks.
With your three points identified to form the "V" shape, use a ruler and a thin sharpie to connect the left-hand mark to the bottom center mark and the bottom center to the right-hand mark.
For the lettering, I created my own stencils to trace. Click the download button to use the PDF I created, print it and cut out each letter.
Align the letters on the front of the banner to your liking. I placed them in the middle, then measured roughly six inches on each side of "BE" and three inches on each side of "KIND" and made sure each letter was spaced out evenly.
Next, take the sharpie and trace
After you've finished tracing, break out your paint and paint brushes and even more carefully fill in each letter! Let it dry completely, then inspect it to see if you need to do more than one coat.
Once your paint job is done and dry, it's time to cut the wooden dowel! The length is totally up to you, but for reference, my husband cut ours to 18 inches long. To get a better picture of the length you may want for your dowel, fold the hem around the dowel, making sure it can slide in and out freely. You can fold the dowel so the hem is shown in front (see below) or you can fold it towards the back so the hem is hidden.
After you (or your husband :) ) cut the dowel, turn your iron on and get the hem tape ready! Fold the hem whichever way you've decided on over the dowel and make sure there is enough space for your hem tape under the hem. Cut the hem tape length to the same width as the banner and place it under the hem.
Slowly iron over the top of the hem, making sure the tape is holding. It takes a few minutes and a couple passes because the hem is thicker than the rest of the drop cloth.
Finally, cut the string to the desired length, tie it on each end of the dowel, and hang it! :)
This DIY project was so simple and budget-friendly, which is the best kind of project, amirite?
I would love to hear what you all think of it and if you make one of your own, be sure to share and tag us in your photos!!
